Region L water planners last week assembled a first-round list of possible water projects, or options, for what they called a "hybrid" plan.
In this list, designations such as "L-10" identify some options. The options may be viewed in greater detail at Region Ls official Web site, at www.watershedexperience.com.
The individual options projected water yields or savings are for the year 2050. (An acre-foot is about 325,860 gallons).
oL-10: Demand reduction and water conservation in municipalities and farm irrigation; 40,000 acre- feet.
oL-15: Purchase or lease of Edwards Aquifer irrigational water, for municipal and industrial use; 70,000 acre-feet.
oL-18: Edwards "Type 2" recharge projects (small rain-catching dams in aquifer-recharge zone); 21,000 acre-feet.
oWater recycling by San Antonio Water System (SAWS) and possibly other municipal systems; 52,000 acre-feet.
oCZ-10: Pumping of Carrizo Aquifer in Wilson and Gonzales counties (majority in Gonzales, as permitted); 50,000 acre-feet.
oSCTN-2a: Local municipalities increased future pumping of Carrizo Aquifer; yield not projected.
oSCTN-1a: Aquifer storage and recovery in Carrizo; storage not projected.
oSCTN-9: Rainwater "harvesting" for household use; savings not projected.
oSCTN-5: Weather modification (regional "cloud seeding"); yield not projected.
oSCTN-4: Brush management (removal of some vegetation in watersheds to increase stream flows and aquifers recharge); savings not projected.
oG-15C: release of unappropriated water from Canyon Lake (Comal County) for storage in Lake Nolte (Guadalupe County) and consumption in Bexar County; 15,000 acre-feet.
oG-24: Canyon Lake water for Wimberly and Wood Creek communities; 1,000 acre-feet.
oLower Colorado River diversion via pipeline to Bexar county; 100,000 to 150,000 acre-feet.
oS-13B: Medina Lake system/Edwards Aquifer recharge enhancement through reduced irrigation; 4,000 acre-feet.
oSCTN-16A: Diversion of Guadalupe River water via pipeline from saltwater barrier; 80,000 acre-feet.
oSCTN-3c: SAWS plan to purchase Simsboro Aquifer water pumped from Alcoas lignite mine in Bastrop County; 55,000 acre-feet.
oSCTN-17: Possibility of future, large-scale desalination project on Gulf Coast.
oSCTN-2b: Local municipalities increased future pumping of the Gulf Coast Aquifer; yield not projected.
oChoke Canyon Reservoir: possible negotiated storage of water for pipeline to Bexar County.
